About Grimes, Iowa

Grimes, Iowa is located in the northwest Des Moines Metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881, incorporated in 1894, and named after Iowa’s third governor, James W. Grimes.

 

Grimes is in both Dallas and Polk counties and is included in the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community benefits from the Metro’s social and economic opportunities due to its close proximity to Interstate 80 and 35. In addition to convenience, the community maintains a close-knit Midwestern mentality that makes every resident proud to call Grimes, Iowa home.

According to to the 2015 Special Census, Grimes experienced a 38.53% increase since 2010. Convenient access to both Interstate 80 and 35 allows for an average work commute of only 20.6 minutes.

 

The median age of the residents is significantly below the state average at 33 years. However, the median household income is above the state average and the unemployment of 1.6% is far below the state average. With exclusive recreational opportunities and a variety of industrial, commercial, and retail enterprises, Grimes is a great place to live, to work, and to play.

Education in Grimes

Grimes, along with Dallas Center form the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School district. The high school campus is located outside of Grimes at 2555 W 1st Street and houses grades 10 through 12. Grades 8 and 9 are at Meadows and are also a part of this campus. The middle school, made of grades 6 and 7, are located in Dallas Center.

 

Dallas Center-Grimes also has four elementary schools (all located in Grimes): Dallas Center Elementary in Dallas Center, South Prairie Elementary, North Ridge Elementary, and Heritage Elementary. The portion of the town located east of Iowa Highway 141 is served by the Johnston Community School District.

With nearby access to Interstate 80 and 35, Grimes residents are within minutes of nearly all of the metro’s restaurants. Grimes also has several of its own local favorites.
